These steps help get you into the action. You don't have to do them in order, but the more of them you do, the better chance of maximising your start and avoiding that dreaded "left out of the fun" feeling.

Let's get started!

*---Post an introduction in our welcome board--and greet others. Say you are looking to start a roleplay and welcome offers; specify what you are looking for.

*--Start more than one roleplay thread; we allow "liquid time" {posting for the same character in more than one thread, like writing separate chapters of a book at the same time}. If you want to be very active, start more than one character.

*--Join a few others' fresh threads replied to within the past day. This is easier than starting your own. Our most active board is Clan Joinings, but try a variety and figure out what pace and style suit you best.

*--Use the mate and/or apprentice request boards. Post links to your roleplay threads. You can also roleplay in these boards if you prefer; there are no grammar/format rules at all there.

*--Use the Newbie Roleplay Finder. Post your requests' and roleplays' links there, and start your own thread and post in others' threads. Meet other new players here; they're in the same boat you are.

*--Browse the roleplay swap's or advanced swap's recent posts. Post links to your roleplay and request threads there.

*--PM someone if you want to start a roleplay with them; say hi. Just don't make it an ad and you should be fine.

*--If you prefer advanced roleplay, apply for that in create your cat. Read how to apply for advanced.

*--Be patient! Players are not intentionally ignoring you. They're just wrapped up in their own roleplays, as you will soon be too if you give it a chance.

*--Put your roleplay links in your signature, with a catchy graphic if you have one.

*--If all this still fails, post in our help den, and bump your intro thread {or start a new one} saying you need help. Post in our support.

Here's hoping this gives you a strong start! If you have suggestions on how to improve this guide, please post feedback.

This thread is for help if you are having problems getting into the roleplay. If you feel excluded, or haven't got any replies, uncomfortable and not sure what to post next, have tried the resource boards and still haven't had any luck.

We will help you out!

One of the best ways to start off is by finding a mate, mentor, apprentice, or buddy. Starting off by trying to build a clan is another way, but this is a lot harder to do. Active group roleplays look exciting, and many of them are how new players get started, but they can sometimes drown you out if you're not prepared, and new players in them may be overlooked simply because of how fast things happen. I recommend joining one by all means if you want to, but also try a smaller roleplay if you are having a hard time fitting into the group one. You can join a few threads and see which one winds up the best!

Another thing to try is our Fun Stuff area. You can join in on chat threads here and forum games and meet other players.

So, if you just feel left out of the fun and need help getting into it just post here! I may not check in immediately but I will try!!! ^_^

The main thing to look out for is a new player joining a group thread, getting replies but then the player doesn't respond and sort of just drops out. They may have been uncomfortable and just not sure what to do next.

In all honesty it's quite hard to get involved and it's not so much a problem of not understanding the site but just being sort of... locked out? Yeah. Cause all the public chat threads are less chats and more like G-rated 4Chan, so it's hard to get to know anyone... compounded by the fact that my threads are all lagging, IC. Like all the cliques have already formed and it's "oh well, no more room for you!"

I like the site, but I have a lot of issues with how it works, socially, which to a degree maybe can't be helped. It's like everybody tries to be friendly and says that if you have any problems talk to us ETC but isn't actually willing to do anything beyond that.

Those are my main issues getting involved with the site, which admittedly might have more to do with my being so socially backwards than the way it works. Not trying to insult anyone.

No I'm glad you brought that up. I know that it is hard for a new player to break through, but not due to anyone's malice. I think actually that people are friendly here. The problem is that that doens't seem to be enough. If you feel friendliness is an issue though, by all means let me know. But yeah--the chats are just goofing off, they are unregulated. I think it's important that they be so. But I highly value your views on this because you seem very much a typical "victim" of the difficulties involved, yet have stuck around in the hopes it will improve. Would you be willing to takl to me by AIM about it? Maybe we can study this and work something out. I really want to improve the situation because I know just what it's like to have a hard time fitting in socially.


Cliques will form in ANY place. That can't be avoided, that is human nature, and I don't think we should try to avoid it. We need to work on helping people enter into those cliques. This is a reasonably big site, at least, large enough that it has multiple cliques, there is some hope there that people coming in will have some choice.

It's like everybody tries to be friendly and says that if you have any problems talk to us ETC but isn't actually willing to do anything beyond that.

This is why our newbie helper prorgamme failed. There is just a lack of follow through. Most of the members who join and initially post drop off and quit before they hit 50 posts and Luellen, you seem typical of that, though you're at 45 posts and hanging in there hoping it gets better. {By the way I'd love to plot with you...I play mostly loners so if you have one maybe I have one too that could work well?}

Oh no, I wouldn't mind talking about it. It's a bit too late for me to go on AIM tonight, right now, unfortunately - but it'd be okay tomorrow if you don't mind.

A lot of it I suspect is being unable to post constantly IC like some people are... there doesn't seem to be much of a medium between making a dozen posts a day and making a post a week. So I either get flooded out or left hanging.

It can be hard to find a happy medium, yes, though at least with slow threads you can join several. I really do want to discuss this because it's been plaguing us for so long. We get like 50 people signing up and posting each day, yet, almost none stick with it. Those who do stick with it praise it to the high heavens {usually } so I know it is not a lack of good plots.


As for the quality and type of chats, I could actually create a board with advanced settings for more "intellectual" types of chatting, if people wanted.

I'm happy to see a thread like this around- I think it will help new members get satisfying roleplaying experiences before they can decide to leave. Of course, trying to get new members to use the things you put out to support them isn't easy, but still. I probably shouldn't be talking about new members as if I wasn't one, considering that I joined about a week ago.
 
I've been having a hard time finding a mentor for my SunClan apprentice Smokepaw. He's the type of cat who probably would have a hard time finding a mentor, but even so, I've done all the things that I can think of to do. I've made a thread in the requests/plot discussions, I've posted him trying to find a mentor in the main camp thread, and I've recently created a thread where he's going to raid Twolegplace to try to get the attention of the warriors so that they'll mentor him. None of which have worked very well.
 
Also, I've been having a hard time finding good threads in the Clan boards that aren't private apprentice training or mate threads. I seriously think there's an overpopulation of romance threads, so if anyone could direct me to good threads in RiverClan and SunClan that don't involve romance, I would really appreciate it.

I did create the find-a-mate board to help centralise those romance threads. Obviously there's a huge demand for them, we just need to get them the right place on the site. And also, apprentice trainings will be private.


I'm in a thread in Riverclan myself, with Snowy and a couple other people. It gets a handful of posts a day. I play Poolpaw, an apprentice tom, and the thread revolves around his and his sister's family. Not sure if that would be what you are looking for.


Looks like I really could stand to recreate that find a mentor or apprentice request board!

If I may suggest, maybe you should create the boards for private threads in the clans? I know it would be a lot, however, it really helps in ThunderClan, and I think it would be a good addition.

You see a lot less exclusion in Thunderclan due to that board? Our plan is indeed to add those boards to the rest; but I want to hear back on how good it really is in opening up threads.

It found it did make a difference. I just think it went a little unnoticed. I know a lot of newer members go there, so I try and make a habit of going in every few days. Before that board, all of the threads were buried and it took a lot of digging, and you rarly got replies because the members had disappeared. However, with this board, I find they're on the first few pages, and there isn't many threads with no replies, usually under 10. Plus, I'm more prone to getting replies on these threads, even if it's only 3/10.
