IC: Deep within the citadel of Angkor Veridas the bane of humanity sat upon his throne of pitch-black iron, his glowing red eyes surveying the room before him. The throne room of the Eternal Citadel at the center of the Imperishable City was not just a throne room, but a map room. The floor was an ever-changing map of Liantar, shifting as more information became available. The Everking watched the changes, totally still. Watching. Waiting. Waiting for the humans to reveal themselves.

Ser Marivik entered the trainee's barracks in Ilenweyr, the fortress of the Knights. The Lord Commander had taken to getting the trainee's out of bed himself, lately. The Knights were few enough that it was rather necessary. "I know most of you are already awake, so rise with the sun. Every minute of daylight you spend sleeping can be a minute spent more profitable," he told the recruits, raising his voice to the necessary level to wake those who were not up yet.

Robb, who had already been up and starting to get ready, saluted the Lord Commander and hurried it up. He strapped his sword-belt around his waist and buckled his sword to it, doing it quite quickly with the ease of long practice. He remembered that there would be an assessment as to the skill of each trainee, which meant it would be quite the interesting day.

Solaire sat out in the dawn sun, collapsed onto a wooden bench. White clouds scattered across the sky and the one or two birds left sang sweetly in the morning air. He was yet to put his main armour on, so relaxed in light leather and cloth. He smiled slightly into the sky as the sun sent long shadows over the land, but the smile didn't last, and his face fell back into a blank neutral expression. He was tired, so very tired, but here was another day awaiting his presence. The Lord Commanders voice drifted in with the wind, another early morning for the recruits as well. More recruits were turning up to join the order now, but with so many knights away it was always a strain looking after them. He wished he was out there too, fighting. The clash of steel, the feel of a blade making its way through bone and muscle. But there were things to do here, he would have his chance to fight soon. But he needed the rest, he often told himself.

Esme was finally dressed, and ready for a long day of training. Training- it's what she lived for. She loved to be able to better herself at what she does. Every day at practice, she found something new about herself that she should work on. For some reason, wielding a blade, shooting an arrow, it all seemed to calm her. She wondered how the assessment today would go, and shook her head to pull herself from her thoughts. She found her way outside, where the sun was starting to rise. She took a deep breath- morning air. It would be an interesting day, she just knew it would. Or maybe she hoped, after all, there was no way to be sure.

The recruits filed out behind the Lord Commander, and Robb walked over to stand by Esme. "Think your ready for today? We'll see if all these long days of training have actually paid off," he  said by way of greeting, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword in the manner of a skilled swordsman.

Esme grinned wide. "Read for today? I've never been more ready for anything." she replied. It was true- she was rather excited. She couldn't wait to show how well she'd improved. She hoped all would go well. "What about you, Robb?"

Robb had to give a grin of his own. "I think I'm ready for it. Of course, how well I do in an assessment and how well I do in battle against the Clattering Army, for example, can be two completely different things," the young Knight pointed out, but further conversation was made impossible.

"You are all trainees, yet each of you is as skilled, or even more so, than some of the Knights. Or at least you should be. That is what we are here to test. Failing the examinations does not mean the second end of the world. You will simply continue as a recruit until the next assessment," Ser Marivik announced, his eyes lingering on each trainee for seemingly the same amount of time.

"You all know how few of us are left here in Avardail. This is your chance to prove yourselves worthy of being the guardians of humanity. On a clear day you can see the city of Sanctum, just half a mile from here. That is what we guard, the last fortress of humanity. Prove to us, and to yourselves, that you are capable and true," the Lord Commander continued, and then he pulled out a scroll. "We will begin with a combat exercise, as the first duty of a Knight is to defend his race with cold hard steel or strong wood," Marivik said, nodding over to the training fields, "You may choose your first opponent."

Esme looked around, but then her gaze settled on Robb. "Rob? Would you do the honors of being my first opponent?" she asked with a light smile, her hand resting readily on her sword at her side. She couldn't contain the excitement, but at same time she felt the first pricks on nervousness hitting her. What if I don't pass the assessment, like I think I will? she thought worriedly. She shook her head slightly, and focused on Robb. Just do your best. she told herself.

OOC: Okay! I don't want to start the assessments without Snow, but I'll fill in the blanks with my first plot direction. Humanity is expanding. Obviously, it has to. Sanctum can't hold an infinite number of people. After the tests, the Knights receive troubling news, and, due to a severe lack of full Knights, they send the trainees. Agreed?

Hello, sweetie.

OOC: Hey, thanks for waiting for me. Up until 1 o'clock last night roleplaying on a new thread I made, asleep until 11 like my college brothers. I need to get a better sleep pattern.

IC: Koren came out of her room and stretched, ready for the day. She had strapped her dagger to her waist already, smiling at how it felt just right against her thigh. Everyone had agreed long ago that it was useless to try and train Koren in the art of the sword because she was hopelessly horrible, so instead they trained her to use size to her advantage, and get in closer with a smaller weapon. Today her heart was in her throat, though. Assessments always made her nervous.

Solaire stepped up next to the Lord Commander. He had switched out into a cloth tunic under which was chain mail, made especially to fit his build. Fingerless leather gauntlets sat comfortably on each hand, well acquainted to what they protected. He had kept his usual leather boots, the same as earlier along with the slightly padded trousers that he wore in case he was forced into riding by unforeseen circumstances. He stood with his feet slightly apart, resting his hands on the pommel of his sword. "Don't push them too hard Marivik, we need new knights but dead trainees is no help at all" he said watching as the group sorted themselves out. "They look promising though" he said quietly into the Lord Commander's ear.

Ooc : I have exams all next week so I may be a little inactive, though after that I'm free so I'll be able to post a lot more :P

"Koren" shouted Solaire. "Assessments are starting, quickly now".

Marivik offered Solaire a slight smile. "They will do well, I think. They have trained long and hard, and their results so far have been impressive... Especially considering the lack of teachers. Ah, well, that should change soon enough," he replied to the Knight, his gaze scanning the trainees once more.

Robb grinned at Esme. "It would be an honor to fight you, Milady," he teased with a bow. When he had first come here he had called every girl Milady, but he had soon realized that was a foolish practice.

Kayle Vouran, another trainee, glanced at Koren. "Shall we dance?" he asked with a grin, nodding at the training field.

Hello, sweetie.

"They have skill, yes, though killing another being, even one you hate will still hit them hard if they are not ready. Real combat is different to training with someone who you know won't kill you, or even hurt you that bad. But yes, there is promise here, and in the others I have seen training, might be that we won't be so short of knights for long, or at least able enough warriors." Solaire shifted his hands on the pommel. "Maybe we should test them further" he said.
Lifting the sword Solaire stepped forwards with the grace and authority of one both younger and more noble. Raising his voice slightly he spoke out to the group of trainees. "One of you who succeeds in your first test will fight me as your second, first to draw blood, be prepared" he said, steeping back slightly after.
